Type 304 stainless steel is the most common austenitic "18-8" grade, containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This composition creates a passive surface layer that delivers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Conforming to ASTM A276, it combines 73,200 PSI tensile strength with high ductility. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and can be readily welded using common techniques.
