Overview
Galvanized sheet is a carbon steel sheet that has been coated with zinc on both sides through a hot-dip process. This zinc coating creates a durable barrier that protects the base steel from rust and corrosion, significantly extending the material's service life, especially in outdoor or high-moisture environments. The process ensures a metallurgical bond between the zinc and steel, providing not only barrier protection but also sacrificial cathodic protection at cut edges or scratches.

Working with Galvanized Sheets
Machining
Galvanized sheet can be machined, drilled, and cut using standard methods. The zinc coating is relatively soft and may build up on tooling. Slower speeds and appropriate coolants are recommended to maintain a clean cut and prevent coating damage near the tool path.
Welding
Welding galvanized steel requires proper ventilation to avoid inhaling zinc fumes. The zinc coating should be ground away from the weld area to ensure a strong, clean weld. Welding can damage the protective coating, so the area should be re-coated with a zinc-rich paint after fabrication to restore corrosion resistance.
Finishing
The material has a protective zinc finish. It can be painted, but the surface must be properly cleaned and primed with a wash primer or a primer specifically designed for galvanized surfaces to ensure proper adhesion.
