How metal sheets are made and what are are their uses in the world’s industries?

In the modern industrialized world, metal sheets can be found practically almost everywhere.  From structures like buildings and towers to transportations such as cars, airplanes as well as sea vessels, it has served for many purposes in various industries.  Basically, they are metals that are formed into flattened thin sheets usually as a foil, plate or leaf depending in the thickness.  Its thickness is indicated with the gauge number hence, the higher the number, the thinner the sheet becomes.  The metals that are usually used to form them are copper, tin, brass, aluminum, titanium, nickel, mild steel as well as cold rolled steel.  Since it is in such form, they can be cut and modified into whatever form needed.  For whatever purpose it may serve, metal sheets have become an essential material for either home or industrial use.

The Processes of Making Metal Sheets

Before metal sheets are being utilized by the different industries that require the material, it has to go through several processes first for form them.  In order to see the whole picture of how it is made, here are the different processes that it has to undergo:

  1. 1.       Melting

The metal is being meltdown down in a crucible.

  1. 2.       Molding

The melted metal from the crucible is poured down in a rectangular mold where it is being molded into a block of metal.

  1. 3.       Cooling

The hot melted metal is being cooled down hence to harden the metal and then removed from the rectangular mold as a rectangular block of metal.

  1. 4.       Pickling

The block of metal will then be dipped into chemicals where it will be cleaned.

  1. 5.       Pressing

After pickling, the block of metal will be fed into a press to flatten the metal.  Depending on the required thickness, it will have to go through the press several times.

  1. 6.       Annealing

This process involves heating up of the metal and will once again be pickled.  The annealing must also be repeated several times before metal sheets are done.

Uses of Metal Sheets

Indeed there are a lot of uses for metal sheets for different industries for quite a long time now.  For the construction of buildings, they are usually used as roofing materials.  They are also used for wall covering as well as material to form cornices, columns and balustrades.  In addition, it is also used in the formation of gutters, valleys and other water channels of the building to drain away the rain water from the roof.  Moreover, they can also be used aesthetically as interior decorations.  In the automotive industry, it is used in the assembly, repair and replacement for the body of cars.  For airplanes, they are used in the making the wings.  For the medical field, they are used in making medical tables and storage units.  With the different uses, there is no doubt that such material is very important.  If you are in need of metal sheets, make sure that you get them from a leading provider when it comes to metalworking.
